If politicians had courage, they would keep us out of “crises” but then …

there would be no way to manipulate voters.

Politicians with courage and our best interests in mind would have:

  • gradually and painlessly increased Social Security taxes to accommodate changing demographics
  • gradually and painlessly increased gasoline taxes to keep the transportation trust adequate to maintain infrastructure
  • prevented direct to consumer prescription drug advertising
  • adjusted Medicare taxes to keep the Trust solvent
  • assured equality of retirement savings opportunities between employer-based and private plans
  • allowed all citizens, not just those with employer coverage, to pay health insurance premiums on a pre-tax basis
  • long ago indexed the minimum wage to inflation
  • have focused on pre-college proficiency in basic subjects and skills, thus helping students prepare for life with or without college
  • paid for all government programs and kept debt to reasonable levels rather than leaving growing liabilities for future generations
  • etc., etc., etc.,

    1. I couldn’t agree more. Especially the part about medical insurance premiums. Seems totally unfair to those of us who have to pay with after tax dollars. Make it the same for everyone regardless of employment status.
