2022 Federal Pay Raise: 3.2% Proposed by House Democrats

Playing politics is a way of life it seems. There is no strategic thinking, no consideration of consequences, no balancing of priorities, but instead pandering. Here is the latest example.

Low inflation, low Social Security COLA and a generous total compensation package as both active and retired federal employees that most American can’t even imagine, not to mention no money in the coffers to fund this compounding expense.

On Thursday, Congressman Gerry Connolly (D-VA) reintroduced the Federal Adjustment of Income Rates (FAIR) Act, a bill that would provide federal employees with a 3.2 percent pay increase in calendar year 2022. A companion bill in the senate will be introduced by Senator Schatz (D-HI) soon. Connolly and Schatz previously introduced similar legislation in the 115th and 116th Congresses. If passed, the law would mandate an across-the-board increase of 2.2% and a 1% increase in locality pay.

“The FAIR Act’s wage adjustment restores years of lost wage increases for federal employees,” according to a statement on Connolly’s website. “Federal employees have scapegoated for four long years,” Connolly said. “ They’ve worked tirelessly throughout a global pandemic, risking their lives in service to the American people. And how has the Trump Administration thanked them? With cruel personal attacks, unsafe work environments, pay freezes, government shutdowns, sequestration cuts, furloughs, and a mindless across-the-board hiring freeze. Still, our federal workforce serves with dedication and distinction every day. They deserve better. The FAIR Act is critical step towards recognizing their contributions and providing fair and just compensation.”

  1. You have to love vote buying.
“Federal employees have scapegoated for four long years,” Connolly said. So what???
“They’ve worked tirelessly throughout a global pandemic, risking their lives in service to the American people.” , Just like millions of other Americans who worked retail if their store were allowed to open. They didn’t work from home like some government employees.

Here are the facts on their past pay raise compare to SS COLAs as a measure of inflation base increases. (source GSA and SSA)
Year – Federal pay raise vs. SS COLAs
    2021 1.0% 1.3%
    2020 2.6% 1.3%
    2019 1.4% 1.6%
    2018 1.4% 2.8%
    2017 1.0% 2.0%
    2016 1.0% 0.3%
    2015 1.0% 0.0%
    2014 1.0% 1.7%
    2013 0.0% 1.5%
    2012 0.0% 1.7%
    2011 0.0% 3.6%
    2010 1.5% 0.0%
    2009 2.9% 0.0%
    2008 2.5% 5.8%

Connolly is trying to blame Trump, but it is Congress that actually gives them the raises. Who was the president in 2011 and who controlled Congress in 2011? Note: It’s politics not party or president. Both are guilty.
