The facts, nothing but the facts

  1. It’s disappointing that the comments on this piece on the importance of facts have so far not cited one single fact. Plenty of opinions, but no facts.

    1. No Facts you say greglee., every time tax rates are raised, revenue to the government goes down and every time tax rates are lowered, revenue to the government goes up. The economy improves every time tax rates are lowered.

      1. The economy improved in the 1960s when JFK and congress lowered tax rates, 1980s when .Ronald Wilson Reagan and congress lowered tax rates and the economy improved after the Trump tax cuts. But you can go ahead RD and think it is not correct, but I have talked to friends that received pay raises, because of the business tax cuts in 2018.

      2. You write “but I have talked to friends that received pay raises, because of the business tax cuts in 2018.” Now that’s a fact, and I believe you. Whether that fact supports your generalizations is another matter. But the point here is that those generalizations are not facts. What’s a fact?

  2. Wishful thinking for 2021. The democrats supported by the speaker of the House, have called all Trump supporters terrorist. That is over 74 million Americans who are now terrorists. How does this support unity? Social media platforms have shutdown conservative and opposing points of view. Cancel culture does not allow dissenting opinions thus shutting down any useful discussions that might lead to compromise or solutions. The bias mainstream media no longer reports facts but reports opinions and so much stuff out of context. These news organizations and social media companies are the ones funding these “fact check” organizations so can you trust the fact checkers? A few times I fact checked the fact checkers and found they were spinning their own facts. I stop using them over a year ago for that reason.

It is getting harder and harder to find the facts. Before somebody attacks me for being wrong, review this website. How many times has misinformation been pointed out here for Social Security. All you have to do is go to the SSA web site to get the facts. But people much rather believe in rants on Facebook and declare that as fact.

    1. I have been watching politics in America since 1971, when my history teacher Mr. Williams at South Gate, CA High School, taught me to question everything that comes from the Media and Government. It is all propaganda to get people to think one way or another, not think for themselves.

      M -Making
      E – Everyone
      D – Dumber
      I – In
      A – America
Studies have shown that every time you raise taxes, the rich move their money into tax exempt financial products and tax receipts to the government go down. That is a fact, but many politicians believe they can tax and spend our country into prosperity and all government spending is good for the economy. Years from now I am sure all this stimulus money that the government is spending, (borrowing), will in fact lower the standard of living for the majority of Americans. Welcome to Modern Monetary Theory a train wreck is right ahead.

      1. “Studies have shown …” Have they? Can we please put this on a factual basis by you telling us, specifically, what studies?

You tell us — how many? What are the facts?

      1. Just go to the Social Security section and take a look over the years. My favorite is Congress stole the Trust Fund money. Followed perhaps by “I paid for my benefits.”

      2. Is it really my responsibility to do the research necessary to establish the truth of things you say are facts? I don’t think so.

      4. I have researched many things in my 65 years and I am wiser for it. I have read reports of the Social Security trustees for years. I have also read other reports, about how tax law and rates affect individual and business behavior. It is time as adults we no longer believe we should be given all the answers, when we have questions, if not, how can we grow as individuals. You may not agree with the facts or opinions of others, but how are you going to know much of anything, if you are not will to search out the truth. To say that something is not true, proves nothing. . .

Yes. Well, I had a 40 year career in teaching and research, and read a number of research papers at meetings of professional societies. I have been challenged from time to time on my facts — it happens all the time. If I had tried to reply by assuring my audience that I was an expert or I had invited them to do their own research on the matter, I would have been howled off the stage. That’s just the way it works.

      6. It does not work that way in real life, at least not in the USAF, where I spent 20 years, working on aircraft avionics.. Maybe in a school setting, but I am not in your class, and I do not want to be. You know what they say, those who can, do, those who can’t teach. I am done with making any further comments to you on this site and I would like you to keep your opinions about any of my comments to yourself, as I will do the same about your comments. You seem to have a chip on your shoulder, or at least that is how I read your comments, good day.
