A recent survey from YouGov indicates that many millennials are turned off on capitalism and would rather live under a socialist system. Their gripe is fairness, opportunity and that they have little chance of doing as well as their parents. As the graph below shows many think our system works against them.
One has to ask how the same system can work for and against a population more or less in the same proportion? I think the answer is in “me.”
Recent generations are simply spoiled, at least in the context of those of us from several generations past. They are unwilling to wait to achieve wants and desires. Their expectations are unrealistic, they more easily seek excuses than solutions. They seek to place blame not accept it.
Many past generations had it a lot harder than today or even my generation on the cusp of boomers and they prevailed. Yes, it’s different today, it’s a big world coming at us, change is at warp speed. No doubt people in past centuries felt the same way, but they pressed on.
Why can’t we? I fear the answer is “me” and that’s tough to deal with.
