Report: Half of U.S. medical care delivered at emergency rooms –

The expansion of health insurance and one of the assumptions within the ACA is that the use of emergency room care would decline. This was assumed to be a cost reduction tool. Old habits are hard to break and rather than decrease, the ER use has increased. This is especially true in urban areas among minority patients who are accustomed to using the ER for most care.

This is one example of why controlling health care costs and hence premiums is so difficult.

Oct. 17 (UPI) — Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine were shocked to find that nearly half of all medical care in the United States is delivered at hospital emergency departments. In recent years, the percentage of care given at ERs has grown significantly, with a new study revealing a nearly 44 percent increase in visits over a 14-year period.

  1. At first I too was shocked by this study then I got to thinking about it. For my 40 years of life, I did not go to a doctor unless I was really, really, really sick. But I did go to the emergency room for stitches and a broken arm in the days before urgent care centers. As I aged, I go to the doctors four times a year for my maintenance drugs. If you do not have the money or do not want to spend the money or take the time to see a doctor for blood pressure medicine or you don’t feel sick, you will end up in the ER. I think that you could make healthcare totally free and people will use the ER instead of taking the time to go to their doctor because they do not feel sick until it is after hours and it is too late for minor treatments.

I understand it too. Do you run to the doctors every time you just don’t feel right? Or do you let a few days pass to see how you feel? You put money out for a trip, do you go or do you lose the money to stay home and try to get a doctor’s appointment? Do you miss work for a doctor’s appointment or wait a month to get an appointment at night? Little Johnny has his play tonight what do you do? You end up in the ER.
