Is it always “lying” by politicians?

Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that “the buck stops here.” Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

I therefore intend to oppose the effort to increase America’s debt limit. Sen Barack Obama March 16, 2006

Yes indeed, our politicians are shifting a tremendous burden to our children and grandchildren and God help us if there is another fiscal crisis. But hey, who cares. Not Obama for sure and those relatively few who seem to care are vilified royally.

During Mr Obama’s tenure as President the debt ceiling was raised more than once and the total federal debt grew from $9 trillion to nearly $20 trillion thereby compounding many of Obama’s valid criticisms in 2006, yet he takes credit for cutting the annual deficit. 🤐

If America had a failure of leadership in 2006, it surely also had one between 2009 and 2017.

So, was Obama lying about his views and valid concerns or was he just being another reprehensible opportunist politician? I don’t think he was lying and certainly no part of the press ever called him so. I think he was talking without understanding the issue as proved by his administration. I think he was grandstanding try to create attention to himself. I think he was playing politics.

Now we have Trump who admittedly shoots off his mouth uncontrollably without thinking, but every comment he makes that doesn’t square with other political views is a lie. Every exaggeration is a lie. Every unachievable promise is a lie. The press and political opposition have created the perfect propaganda environment while ignoring the “lies” of many others.

  1. SAT question: Which presidential candidate has said just about anything in order to get elected? A. Barack Obama, B. Donald Trump, C. Both A and B, D. Neither A nor B.

  2. Your chart is highly misleading. We have not had a budget for seven years – but continuing resolutions. Autopilot to hell. It made no difference who controlled Congress, because Harry Reid bottled up the Senate since the 2009-2010 budget – baking into the cake the spend temporarily approved due to the Great Recession.

It has been 8 years since the recession ended. Seen anyone call for a “Recovery Dividend” of reduced taxes or deficits now that the recession is over. No, both R’s and D’s keep buying votes and sending the bill to the unborn.
