Political PACs and fake news are helping to delay fixing Social Security‼️

Could it be that Russia was able to plant fake information to influence Americans? You betcha, just like many other groups do all the time. Once the seed of misinformation is planted, it grows like crabgrass and people want their initial belief reinforced, facts be damned (or simply ignpored).

Here is a good example. Note the words “piggy bank.” This implies, and many people believe, that Congress diverted Social Security tax receipts for other purposes and that’s why SS faces serious fiscal trouble. Neither of those things are true and yet all the comments associated with this meme believe it. The comments mostly blame Bush and Republicans. They used to blame Reagan and Johnson.

So, do you think there is a political ulterior motive at work here planting the seed that Republicans want to destroy SS? Again, you betcha😏

The pen and propaganda are powerful tools … because we let them be🤢

This group is in fact a Political Action Committee supporting Democratic candidates and opposing Republicans

  1. We have a problem with the electorate. Most seem to demand flattery rather than the truth. Gone is the day a politician counseled that the electorate must ask what they could do for their country rather than demanding the country do something for them. Our political leaders in order to get elected refuse honest discussion because an ignorant , selfish and deluded electorate demand promises that are unrealistic. Social security will put on a sustainable path. But not anytime soon.

    • Vince – In the 2030’s when everyone getting a Social Security check will have to take a 25% cut, then something might be done, but I am not even sure then anything will change. I see a 40 trillion national debt bomb coming.

      • JRATT, You may well be right. It’s likely I will have already reached room temperature by then so won’t be available to do much except spin in my grave. But if it were possible I wouldn’t mind haunting congressional offices for a while.

    • Vince, I like the second definition of haunted in the dictionary.

having or showing signs of mental anguish or torment.

synonyms: tormented, anguished, troubled, tortured, worried, disturbed

It fits most of our politicians, today. lol.

  2. I was thinking the other day. I know how we can fix Social Security and pay down the national debt. Get rid of the non profit tax break for all. 501.3c is the get out of paying taxes lottery. Then maybe we would not have all these Pac’s and organizations like National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare polluting the facts. We all know these so called non-profits are in it for profit. Maybe that is why we have an underfunded government, to many non-profits not paying their fair share. Churches included. Think of the revenue stream if we just taxed them at 10%, after all that is what the churches ask of members.

  3. I am always happy to see, but never surprised, how people are “sold” preserve without a price tag on what they bought. Oh, wait! That’s right. These folks want your children, grandchildren and those yet unborn (those who may not yet vote) to pay.

Always buying votes by promising someone else will pay.

Sounds a little like Wimpy. “Someone else will gladly pay someday for my benefits today”.

Worse, they want to increase benefits even more disproportionately to favor those who paid in the least.

  4. The only thing that I find misleading is that it is “your retirement”. This is another reason why people fail to save for retirement because some people think they have a retirement plan.

It is Congress’s piggy bank as in a bank where they (the Treasury) get loans and pay back interest. If it was not for the government paying interest, the fund would have been broke long ago.

    • The implication that because Treasuries were issued as an investment has anything to do with the fiscal state of the system and trust is completely false. It would be no different actually worse if the Trust were all cash.
